Philtrum / Ren Zhong
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The upper third of the nasolabial groove. It is the intersection of the Du Meridian (Yang) and the Hand and Foot Yangming Meridians.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Reset button. When a person is unconscious (yin and yang separating), pinch the philtrum firmly. The strong pain stimulus activates the Du Meridian (the sea of yang qi), forcibly reconnecting the yin-yang circuit. This is the most ancient CPR button.
Anchor fast decisions
The philtrum (Shuigou) is a key acupoint for awakening the spirit. In emergencies, stimulating it opens the orifices and revives the mind. It exemplifies the holistic approach where a single point can leverage the entire body.
