The cognitive burden imposed by the inherent complexity of the learning material itself. It depends on the number of knowledge elements and the degree of their interaction (Element Interactivity).

Assess task difficulty. For intrinsic load, we cannot eliminate it, only manage it. The strategy is 'chunking': breaking large tasks into small steps and processing them in batches.

Anchor fast decisions

The number of elements in the material and the complexity of their interactions (element interactivity) determine intrinsic load. It is the 'amount of processing necessarily required to learn the content' and cannot be eliminated, only managed. The higher the element interactivity, the less can be processed at one time.
