CORE DEFINITION

A core technique aimed at identifying and challenging maladaptive, irrational automatic thoughts (e.g., "if not perfect, then failure") and replacing them with more realistic, adaptive thoughts.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Debugging of thought. Treat yourself as code, bugs are erroneous beliefs. Cognitive restructuring is the debugging process: find the error line (negative emotion), analyze the code logic (belief), rewrite the code (new belief).

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Automatic thoughts often contain cognitive distortions (all-or-nothing, catastrophizing, mind reading). Restructuring is a 'debugging' process of identifying → examining evidence → generating alternative thoughts, replacing maladaptive beliefs with more realistic ones.
