CORE DEFINITION

Refers to a pattern of passive, repetitive, and compulsive thinking about painful emotions and their causes and consequences (like a cow chewing cud). Unlike reflection, rumination does not produce solutions and only deepens depression.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Identify toxic thinking. When you find yourself replaying the same unfortunate event in your mind for the tenth time without reaching a new conclusion, that is rumination. You must immediately interrupt it through exercise or tasks with high cognitive load (such as solving math problems).

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Repeatedly and passively dwelling on negative emotions and the causes of 'why me' rather than solving them is a maladaptive cognitive loop that prolongs depression and anxiety.
