Self-Verification Theory
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
People tend to seek feedback that confirms their self-concept, even if it is negative. If you think you are bad, you will prefer those who criticize you because they make the world feel predictable.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Understanding the causes of bad relationships. It explains why people with low self-esteem cannot leave toxic relationships. Breaking this cycle requires metacognitive intervention: realizing that this 'comfortable familiarity' is toxic.
Anchor fast decisions
People are motivated to have others see them in a way that is consistent with their self-concept, to maintain predictability and a sense of coherence; even if the self-concept is negative, they prefer consistent feedback over flattering but inconsistent feedback.
