CORE DEFINITION

Four steps to handle intense emotions: Recognize, Allow, Investigate, Non-identification.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Emotional defusion. When overwhelmed by negative emotions, RAIN helps us shift from "I am angry" to "I observe anger flowing through me," thereby cutting off emotional hijacking and restoring metacognitive monitoring.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

When emotions strike, people tend to identify with the emotion ("I am anger"), losing choice. RAIN's four steps create observer distance: Recognize (R), Allow (A, without suppression), Investigate (I, bodily sensations), Non-identification (N, just an observer). It transforms "being hijacked by emotions" into "observing emotions flowing through," restoring metacognition and response ability.
