Interoception
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The ability to perceive the internal state of the body (e.g., heartbeat, gastrointestinal motility, muscle tension). It is not only a physiological perception but also the foundation of emotions (e.g., 'intuition' often comes from visceral sensations).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Connects mind and body. When metacognition fails (the brain can't figure it out), pay attention to interoception (what the body thinks). Many anxiety and decision paralysis can be alleviated by improving interoceptive acuity (e.g., body scan meditation).
Anchor fast decisions
Internal body signals (heartbeat, breathing, gastrointestinal, muscle tension) are transmitted upward via the vagus nerve, constituting our perception of the body's state, and are the physiological source of emotions and 'intuition'. Interoceptive acuity affects emotional regulation and decision-making quality.
