Emotional Granularity
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The ability to distinguish and define specific emotions. People with low granularity can only say 'I feel bad'; people with high granularity can distinguish 'Do I feel disappointed, anxious, or betrayed?' Scaffolding role: precise emotion regulation. You cannot manage what you cannot name. Increasing emotional granularity helps the brain more accurately predict needs and mobilize bodily resources, and is the underlying code of emotional intelligence (EQ).
