INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

A pattern in Chinese medicine in which the stool contains undigested food remnants, described as food not transformed. It is attributed to deficiency of spleen yang with failure of transportation and transformation, and characterized as clear qi sinking downward. The middle burner, the body's processing plant, has stopped working, so what goes in comes out nearly unchanged. The same structure appears in organizations and systems as a bypassed processing step: raw material flows straight through without being converted, so the output looks like a completed process while carrying none of the value that processing should have added.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Spot the Bypass: treat unchanged output as evidence that the middle step never ran - Find the Plant: locate the processing stage that stopped adding value - Repair Before Optimizing: restore the conversion step instead of speeding up the pipeline

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Conversion requires a functioning processing stage; when that stage loses its capacity, material passes through with only the appearance of processing, so input and output become nearly identical. Because the pipeline still moves, the failure is invisible to anyone watching throughput, and speed metrics may even look healthy while value creation has stopped. Value is restored only by repairing the conversion step itself, since adding volume to a bypassed stage merely moves more raw material to the end unchanged.
