Strange Loop
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
When a system develops level by level upwards, but suddenly finds itself back at the starting point, a strange loop is formed. The "self" (I) is a strange loop: the neurons of the brain (physical layer) produce symbols (information layer), and the interaction of symbols emerges into consciousness (self), which in turn can control the neurons.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
A strange loop is a cyclic structure that goes through several levels in a hierarchical system. It arises when, by moving only upwards or downwards through the system, one finds oneself back where one started. Strange loops may involve self-reference and paradox. The concept of a strange loop was pr…
Anchor fast decisions
Strange loop (Hofstadter): In a system composed of low-level rules, the high level (the "I", meaning) emerges from low-level loops that "go up through levels and then fold back" in a self-referential manner, forming a closed loop across levels, which is one of the sources of consciousness and self-reference.
