INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

The eighth picture of Kuoan Shiyuan's Ten Ox-Herding Pictures, traditionally shown as an empty circle. Not only has the ox vanished, so has the notion of a practitioner who is doing the training, and with them the subject-object duality that framed the whole exercise. The stage points to emptiness in the Buddhist sense rather than to nothingness: labels, concepts and attachments are released, and what remains is undivided awareness. It is used as a test of whether one is still clinging to ideas of being a practitioner or of having attained something.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Empty the Board: strip labels and concepts to see what remains when nothing is being pursued - Test the Clinging: check whether you still identify as the one who is practicing - Avoid the Void: emptiness is the end of framing, not a blank state to be manufactured

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Every frame of practice presupposes a practitioner and a goal, so progress itself keeps the duality alive; when the goal dissolves, the practitioner concept that depended on it dissolves too. Attention then operates without a self-referential layer, which is why the picture is drawn as an empty circle rather than as a person in a state. Manufacturing blankness reproduces the same structure from the other side, since it remains something the practitioner is doing, and the result is a dead stillness rather than release.
