False Uniqueness Effect
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-31
CORE DEFINITION
People tend to underestimate how common their positive attributes are, believing their talents or morals are unique (e.g., "Only I am this upright").
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Narcissism calibration. Don't feel that your talents are unrecognized. Your 'unique idea' might be thought of by 1000 people at the same moment. Execution is more important than 'unique ideas'.
Anchor fast decisions
People tend to underestimate how similar others are to themselves (feeling unique and rare in positive traits) and overestimate similarity with others (in negative traits), to protect self-esteem.
