INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

In medias res means “into the middle of things”: a narrative starts partway through its chronological action, with background supplied as needed. It does not mean media studies and need not start at the climax.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Cold Open: start at the point of live tension instead of building up to it - Hook First: use unresolved action to buy attention for the background that follows - Backfill on Demand: supply context only at the moment the audience needs it

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Attention is cheaper to hold than to win. An audience meeting an event already in progress must resolve an open question, and that unresolved state sustains engagement until the background arrives. Beginning at the start, by contrast, spends attention on setup before any stake exists. The technique trades temporary confusion for immediate involvement, then repays the confusion with context once a question has formed.

MINIMUM ACTION

In progress 0/1
