A treatment principle from traditional Chinese medicine based on the five-phase restraining cycle, in which wood restrains earth. When liver qi is excessive or stagnated, it overacts on the spleen, producing abdominal pain, poor appetite and diarrhea, as in the classic pain-with-diarrhea pattern treated by Tongxie Yaofang. The method restrains the overactive wood while supporting the restrained earth, restoring balance between the two organs.
