Steelmanning
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
The opposite of the straw man fallacy (attacking the weakest version of the opponent's argument). First, help the opponent refine their argument to its most perfect and robust state (the steel man), then rebut it.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Cognitive upgrade. If you can refute the opponent's steel man, you truly win. This forces you to genuinely understand their logic, even integrating it into your own framework.
Anchor fast decisions
Using 'steel man' as a metaphor for actively forging one's own plan or system to extreme robustness—anticipating the fiercest doubts and impacts and still standing firm. It is the application of steelmanning to oneself (self stress-testing).
