Spoiler Effect
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In an election or competition, the entry of a third-party candidate who is destined to lose (the spoiler) splits the votes of a major candidate, thereby leading to the victory of the opposing candidate with contrary ideology.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Analyze multi-party games. If you cannot defeat your opponent, you can support a 'spoiler' similar to your opponent to divide their resources. This is common in business competition (launching a low-priced sub-brand) and politics.
Anchor fast decisions
Under plurality voting with single-member districts, a spoiler with similar stance splits the votes of the same camp, allowing the opposing camp to win with a relative majority. The essence is 'same-kind competition, different-kind benefit' vote splitting. It can be actively used: support a similar spoiler to divide the opponent.
