Five Tissues

CORE DEFINITION
A framework from the Huangdi Neijing that divides the body into five tissue layers, skin, vessels, flesh, sinews and bone, paired in order with the lungs, heart, spleen, liver and kidneys. Its central claim is that disease enters and descends through these layers, so the depth of tissue involved indicates the depth and severity of the illness. The qualification is that the scheme is a functional and dynamic map of progression rather than an anatomical inventory; it is used to judge how far a disorder has advanced and how hard it will be to reverse.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Depth gauge: read how far a condition has travelled by which layer it has reached. - Layered defence: treat at the outermost layer while the problem is still cheap to fix. - Escalation ladder: let depth of invasion decide how much force the treatment deserves.
Anchor fast decisions
The layers are ordered from surface to core, and each is governed by a paired organ, so a disorder that has moved inward has already crossed organ boundaries. Because reversal becomes harder at every step, depth alone carries prognostic information: skin patterns resolve with sweating, while bone patterns do not resolve at all.
