The Minority Rule
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Taleb proposes that as long as a minority's preferences are 'stubborn' and incompatible with others, their standards will rule the majority in reverse, even if they are few in number.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
A stubborn minority can reverse-set the standard for the majority.
Anchor fast decisions
Taleb proposes that when a minority group has an 'asymmetric preference' for a certain choice (strongly rejecting an option and never compromising), while the majority is merely 'indifferent' (can compromise), then as long as the minority proportion exceeds a certain threshold, the entire system will converge to the state preferred by the minority. Because suppliers adjust to satisfy the minority, the majority passively follows.
