McDonaldization
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Modern society increasingly pursues efficiency (fastest way to reach), calculability (quantitative standards), predictability (same everywhere), and control (replacing humans with technology). While this brings convenience, it also leads to the disenchantment of the world and the dehumanization of people.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Reflect on standardization: After a business grows, it inevitably pursues McDonaldization. However, be wary that excessive standardization can kill innovation and human touch (e.g., customer service all robots), leaving an attack gap for competitors with "handcrafted/customized/warm" features.
Anchor fast decisions
Proposed by George Ritzer, it refers to the rationalization process in various social spheres exhibiting four characteristics: efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control, stemming from the diffusion of fast-food industry logic to the whole society.
