Cesare Borgia's Apology
Updated 2026-08-04
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A case recorded by Niccolo Machiavelli in The Prince. Cesare Borgia appointed the harsh Remirro de Orco to pacify the chaotic Romagna; Remirro restored order through cruelty and became widely hated. Borgia then had him executed and displayed in the public square, keeping the order, absorbing the gratitude, and deflecting the resentment. The key qualification is that this is a dark technique: it depends on the deputy being genuinely disposable and on the audience not seeing through the staging.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Dirty-work triage: identify tasks that must be done but should not be publicly attributed to you. - Proxy design: choose an agent whose later removal will not damage the core. - Detection lens: ask who is being set up to absorb blame for a decision someone else made.
Anchor fast decisions
Legitimacy and resentment attach to whoever is seen acting, so splitting the actor from the beneficiary lets one person collect the benefit and the other absorb the cost. The deputy performs the coercion and becomes its visible symbol; removing him then reads as justice rather than as a further act of force. The mechanism is responsibility externalization, and it works only as long as the audience accepts the staged narrative.
