CORE DEFINITION

Adversity can lead not only to PTSD but also to PTG. After struggling with intense crises, individuals may achieve positive transcendence in interpersonal relationships, personal strength, spiritual depth, and other areas.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Narrative reconstruction: This Nietzsche quote now has scientific basis: "What does not kill me makes me stronger." It helps the frustrated shift from a "victim mentality" to a "survivor/evolver mentality."

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Proposed by Tedeschi & Calhoun. While adversity destroys, it may also trigger positive reconstruction of cognitive schemas—individuals grow in relationships, personal strength, life priorities, new possibilities, and spiritual dimensions. The mechanism is "meaning reconstruction after damage": the collapse of old assumptions forces re-narration, giving rise to a more mature self.
