Von Restorff Effect
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Among a group of similar stimuli, the most distinctive and different item is most likely to be remembered (isolation effect).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Differentiation: In a row of interviewers wearing suits, the one in a red dress will be remembered. In a text-heavy PPT, the only chart will be remembered. Mediocrity is a black hole for memory; uniqueness is a hook for memory.
Anchor fast decisions
In a sequence of similar items, an isolated, significantly different item receives deeper encoding and is thus more easily recalled. The brain allocates more attentional resources to the "anomaly," making the distinct item stand out from the background.
