Luxury Beliefs
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Similar to luxury goods, the upper class displays status by holding certain "beliefs" (e.g., "marriage is unnecessary", "hard work is a trap"). These beliefs are harmless to the upper class (because they have resources to fall back on), but if adopted by the lower class, they can be devastating (because they lose the two only ladders of upward mobility: family and hard work).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Thought quarantine. Do not blindly imitate elite values. Ask yourself: "If I actually live by this belief, do I have enough of a trust fund to pay the price?"
Anchor fast decisions
Same as "Luxury Faith" referring to Rob Henderson's concept: certain beliefs are low-cost status signals for the elite, but impose real costs on the lower class. The mechanism is that the class-signaling function of beliefs outweighs their practical function.
