Competitive Strategy
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In competition, there are only three basic strategies: Cost Leadership, Differentiation, and Focus. Being stuck in the middle is fatal.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Clarify your survival niche. You either be the cheapest (like Pinduoduo), the best (like Apple), or the one that best understands a specific segment. Never make a mediocre product that is 'a bit expensive, a bit good, and for the masses.'
Anchor fast decisions
Porter argues that long-term profitability can only come from three generic strategies: Cost Leadership, Differentiation, and Focus. Failing to choose one and being 'stuck in the middle' will result in losing on both cost and premium fronts.
