The Batman Effect
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
When children are doing boring tasks, if they pretend to be 'Batman' or 'Hermione', their persistence time significantly increases. Through a third-person perspective (Self-Distancing), one can detach the self from the current pain.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Identity borrowing. When you have stage fright or procrastinate, don't try to 'overcome' it. Ask yourself: 'If I were Jobs/Musk, what would I do now?' Put on the character's psychological armor and turn the difficult problem into the character's script.
Anchor fast decisions
Child psychology: making oneself become a powerful character (such as Batman) to perform difficult tasks, using character distance to enhance self-control and persistence.
