CORE DEFINITION

Refers to the act of not intending to establish a real relationship with the other party, but by occasionally sending a message or giving a like (breadcrumbs), giving the other party some hope, keeping them on the hook, to maintain one's own presence or backup options.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Recognize cognitive manipulation. If you feel that over a period of time you are always "not full but not starving," you may be being breadcrumbed. The correct approach is to refuse to eat food handed out in contempt and decisively leave.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Not establishing a real relationship, but using sporadic interactions (likes, occasional messages) to give the other party "hope" to maintain presence/backup options. It exploits the other party's reluctance and uncertainty for low-cost maintenance—cognitive manipulation of "not full but not starving."
