RNG - Random Number Generation
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
An algorithm in games that determines uncertain events such as drops and critical hits. Players often refer to pure luck as 'RNG gods'.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Surrender to randomness. Accept the RNG component in reality. You did everything right, but RNG decided you Miss (failed). It's not your fault, nor the system's. It's part of the game. Don't negate your strategy because of one RNG failure; with a large enough sample size, RNG will regress to the expected value.
Anchor fast decisions
Random number generators produce unpredictable (true random) or reproducible (pseudo-random) sequences; the former relies on physical entropy sources, the latter on algorithms and seeds.
