CORE DEFINITION

Instead of designing an ideal path and forcing users to take it, first observe where the muddy paths trampled by users (or cows) already exist on the grass, and then pave the road directly on top of them.

Go with the flow. Don't teach users how to use the product. Observe how they actually use it (even if it's misuse), and then turn that 'misuse' into an official feature (e.g., Twitter's @ and # were invented by users).
