Default Mode Network, DMN
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A set of brain regions that are paradoxically more active when the brain is not focused on external tasks (e.g., daydreaming, resting). It is responsible for self-reflection, recalling the past, and imagining the future.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Justifies taking breaks: explains why inspiration often strikes during a shower or a walk. High-intensity focus (executive network) suppresses the DMN. The brain must be given 'offline time' for creativity to take over.
Anchor fast decisions
A network active during rest (including medial prefrontal cortex, posterior cingulate, etc.), involved in self-referential thought, mind-wandering, episodic memory, and future imagination; suppressed during tasks.
