Evil Maid Attack
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
An attack targeting unattended devices. The attacker (disguised as a maid) installs a hardware keylogger or modifies the bootloader during physical access to your computer, thereby bypassing software encryption.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Physical boundary awareness. No matter how strong your software firewall is, if the physical device leaves your sight (e.g., left in a hotel room), it is untrusted. In high-risk environments, the device must be carried with you.
Anchor fast decisions
The attacker tampers with the device (e.g., implants a malicious bootloader) while the owner is away (e.g., a hotel maid has physical access to the computer), and later steals data after the owner unlocks it with a password.
