The Map is not the Territory
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Alfred Korzybski. It refers to the fact that the cognitive models in our minds (the map) are only abstractions and simplifications of the real world (the territory), not reality itself. Models always omit details.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Correct cognitive biases. It reminds us that when a model conflicts with reality, the map is wrong, not the territory. Do not treat labels, symbols, or theories as absolute truths; always be ready to update the map.
Anchor fast decisions
Korzybski proposed that cognitive models in the mind are only abstractions of reality, inevitably losing details. When a model conflicts with reality, the model should be revised rather than denying reality. Language, labels, and theories are maps, not the territory itself.
