Heartland Theory
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Mackinder. Whoever rules Eastern Europe commands the Heartland (the core of the Eurasian continent); whoever rules the Heartland commands the World Island; whoever rules the World Island commands the world.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Understanding great power competition. It provides a geographically deterministic perspective, explaining why historically land powers (such as Russia and Germany) and sea powers (such as Britain and the United States) have always contended for the interior of the Eurasian continent.
Anchor fast decisions
Halford Mackinder proposed: whoever controls Eastern Europe, the 'Heartland', can control the 'World Island', and thereby dominate the world. The logic is the strategic depth advantage of land power over sea power; geographic infrastructure determines the pattern of hegemony.
