Balancing Dryness and Dampness
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In medication, consider the balance between moistening and drying. When treating dampness diseases (which require drying agents), often add a little moistening agent to prevent damage to yin; when treating dryness diseases (which require moistening agents), often add a qi-regulating agent to prevent cloying stickiness.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Humidity regulator. A good prescription has excellent 'mouthfeel' and 'texture'. Do not make the prescription too dry (all stones) or too greasy (all glue). Make the body feel fresh and moisturized.
Anchor fast decisions
A principle of TCM care and medication: warming-drying and cold-cooling, dampness-resolving and moistening-drying mutually restrain and complement each other, so that the body is neither excessive nor deficient. For example, add moistening agents to prevent drying agents from injuring fluids; add warming agents to prevent moistening agents from hindering transportation.
