Positioning Theory
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Trout and Ries. Positioning is not what you do to the product, but what you do to the mind of the prospect. The core is to find an empty position in the customer's mind and be the first to occupy it.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Seize mental share. In homogeneous competition, do not try to say "I am better," but emphasize "I am different." By occupying a specific label (e.g., "the safest car"), become the synonym for that category.
Anchor fast decisions
Users have limited mental capacity; in each category, they can only remember a few brands and their labels. Positioning leverages this "mental ladder" to seize a differentiated empty slot, making the brand synonymous with a certain attribute. Once the first mover occupies the position, later entrants must reposition or create a new category.
