Pathetic Fallacy
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Proposed by Ruskin. It refers to attributing human emotions, intentions to inanimate objects or natural phenomena (e.g., "cruel sea", "angry storm", or "the market wants to rebound").
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Objectivity cleansing. The market has no emotions, systems have no intentions. Stop using anthropomorphic language to describe objective systems, as this interferes with rational analysis of their mechanical principles.
Anchor fast decisions
Replacing judgment of the object's intrinsic value with moving emotions (e.g., "if it makes me cry, it's good"). The mechanism is that emotional response is mistaken for a quality criterion.
