Chauffeur Knowledge
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
A story told by Charlie Munger: Planck's chauffeur, having heard Planck's lectures many times, could recite them and speak plausibly, but did not truly understand physics. It refers to 'pseudo-knowledge' that has only formal performance ability but lacks real understanding.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Distinguishing true knowledge from performance. It helps us identify experts and charlatans: true experts can answer deep questions, while those with 'chauffeur knowledge' will be exposed once asked questions outside the script.
Anchor fast decisions
Knowledge can be divided into 'declarative memory' (formulas, scripts that can be recited) and 'procedural/structural understanding' (knowing why, being able to transfer, handling surprises). Chauffeur knowledge stays at the former: through repeated listening and memorization, one gains fluent expression, but lacks the underlying causal chain, so it collapses when encountering boundary conditions or being asked 'why'. The fluency illusion makes the person themselves mistakenly believe they understand.
