CORE DEFINITION

Refers to transactional tasks that require low cognitive demand and are typically performed in a distracting environment (e.g., answering emails, filling out forms, attending routine meetings). Such work creates little new value and is easily replaceable.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Identifying inefficient busyness. It reminds us not to equate 'busyness' with 'productivity'. If a day is filled with shallow work, one's career may face stagnation and the risk of being replaced by AI.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Proposed by Cal Newport: refers to transactional tasks that do not require high cognitive investment, can be completed amid frequent interruptions, and whose value is easily replicated by others (emails, routine meetings, shallow coordination). It contrasts with deep work, and too much of it can crowd out time for creating value.
