Vector Thinking
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Having only magnitude (effort) without direction (alignment with goals) is scalar; having both magnitude and direction is vector. The resultant force of a team is the vector sum of all individual vectors.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Eliminating internal friction. If team members are all working hard (large magnitude) but their directions are inconsistent (large angle), the resultant force may be zero or even negative. The core task of a leader is not to urge effort but to adjust direction (reduce the angle).
Anchor fast decisions
The resultant force equals the sum of component vectors; when multiple effort directions have large angles, even if each 'magnitude' is large, the vector sum will cancel out or even become negative (internal friction). Aligning directions (reducing angles) can improve effective output more than simply increasing effort magnitude.
