Teleological Thinking
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
In contrast to Freud's 'etiology' (the past determines the present), it holds that human behavior is driven by 'future purposes'. Your pain or symptoms (such as social phobia) are often self-created to achieve a certain purpose (such as avoiding evaluation).
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Breaking out of the victim mentality. Don't ask 'What happened in the past to make me this way?', but ask 'What am I getting or avoiding by maintaining this symptom now?' Only by identifying the hidden purpose can you have the freedom to change.
Anchor fast decisions
Explaining the cause of things by purpose or end state, always asking 'for what'. Be cautious of the teleological fallacy when applied to nature.
