CORE DEFINITION

Proposed by McGuire. To prevent someone from being persuaded by future opposing viewpoints, first expose them to a weakened version of that viewpoint and provide rebuttals, thereby generating 'antibodies'.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

Belief reinforcement. If you are going to implement a new policy, proactively raise possible objections and rebut them yourself, which is more effective than waiting for others to attack you.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Inoculation theory (McGuire): First 'inoculate' the audience with a weakened persuasive attack and let them practice rebuttal, which can enhance the 'psychological antibodies' to resist subsequent strong persuasion, like a vaccine. The mechanism is advance warning plus rehearsal of defense.
