Shifting the Burden
Version 1.0.0 · Updated 2026-07-30
CORE DEFINITION
Shifting the burden is a systems archetype in which a quick symptomatic remedy reduces attention to a slower fundamental solution. Side effects of the remedy may further erode the ability to implement that solution, increasing dependence on repeated symptom relief. The defining feature is this dependence feedback, not merely the presence of a short-term measure.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
Check whether firefighting or repeatedly solving problems for others displaces capability building or root-cause repair. Plan immediate stabilization alongside longer-term work, specify when temporary measures should end, and distinguish short-term relief from resolution.
Anchor fast decisions
The archetype contains two balancing loops that relieve symptoms: a fast symptomatic response and a delayed fundamental response. Quick relief can reduce willingness to pursue the latter; side effects that further undermine repair capacity create reinforcing dependence. Shifting to an outside intervener is one variant, and temporary measures may be needed while the fundamental solution takes effect.
