INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

The English word reduce comes from the Latin reducere, meaning literally to lead back. To say that the mind reduces to the physical, or that heat reduces to molecular kinetic energy, is to say that the reduced can, in some relevant sense, be brought back to the reducer. The classical Nagelian model of reduction proceeds by derivation with the help of bridge laws.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Level questioning: ask whether a higher-level phenomenon can be fully derived from lower-level vocabulary. - Bridge checking: examine whether bridge laws that allow derivation exist between the two vocabularies. - Multiple realizability spotting: recognize where the same function is realized by different substrates and thereby blocks reduction.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Reduction is awaited because it promises unity and explanation: if higher-level states can be fully derived from lower-level ones, the scientific picture becomes more economical. The key to this is bridging, connecting the two vocabularies by bridge laws and then deriving. The difficulty usually lies in the bridge itself, for multiple realizability and incommensurability can make it fail.
