Natural Kinds

CORE DEFINITION
The sciences constantly sort the individuals they study into kinds and theorize about those kinds. To call a kind natural is to say that the grouping reflects the structure of the natural world and not human interests and activities. The contrast matters because natural kinds are the bearers of inductive projection and of scientific laws, while artificial classifications carry no such inferential license.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- License the induction: judge whether what was learned from a sample carries to other members of the kind. - Audit the classification: ask whether the kind carves the world at its joints or merely serves a purpose. - Press for essence: ask what real microstructure or stable causal property the members share.
Anchor fast decisions
What matters about natural kinds is that they support induction: if the members of a kind share a real internal structure, a microstructure or a stable set of causal properties, then what is learned from a sample can be projected to the other members. Natural kinds are therefore the bearers of inductive projection and scientific law, and the closer a classification sits to the joints of the world, the more reliable inference based on it becomes.
