INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

From the book Zhuangzi: the Marquis of Lu received a seabird and welcomed it with the highest state rites, music, wine, and ceremonial offerings. The bird died within three days of shock and exhaustion. He raised the bird the way people should be raised rather than the way a bird should be raised. The scaffold is projection bias: what you consider the best may be the other party's poison. In user experience design, never force features you deem advanced onto users who do not need them.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Ask the recipient first: confirm what the other actually wants before offering your best. - Match nature to supply: provision by the object's nature, not by your own standards. - Audit your gift: suspect any kindness that is really self-expression.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

The harm comes from a broken inference: I value X, therefore the other must value X. The inference skips the other's nature entirely, so the offering escalates in proportion to the giver's goodwill while its suitability falls. The bird dies precisely because the offerings were lavish, not because they were poor. Generosity without a model of the recipient compounds the mismatch.
