Weisbord's Six-Box Model
Updated 2026-08-16
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
Developed by Marvin Weisbord, the six-box model diagnoses organizations along six dimensions: purposes, structure, relationships, rewards, leadership, and helpful mechanisms. Its core claim is that an organization is a coupled system in which imbalance in any box spills into the others, so diagnosis must scan all six rather than treat the visible symptom as the whole problem. The model is often paired with McKinsey 7S and requires that findings be read together as one system issue rather than as isolated faults.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Scan box by box: work through purposes, structure, relationships, rewards, leadership, and mechanisms in order. - Read the system: connect findings across boxes instead of treating one as a lone fault. - Check alignment: verify whether rewards actually point at the stated purposes.
Anchor fast decisions
An organization is a coupled system in which the six boxes influence one another, so imbalance in any one of them, such as rewards misaligned with purposes, spills over into morale, relationships, and structure; whole-system scanning therefore beats single-point repair.
