Growing Straight Among Hemp
Updated 2026-08-22
INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
From the Encouraging Learning chapter of the Xunzi: couch-grass is by nature soft and curved, yet growing among straight hemp it stands upright without support. Its claim is that environment shapes the person, so a high-standard field of culture and process reshapes even ordinary recruits toward excellence, making field-building a better strategy than recruiting alone.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Field over recruit: build the high-standard environment rather than hunting only for elites. - Immersion onboarding: place the newcomer inside the field and let it do the shaping. - Mechanism check: change the environment, not only the person.
Anchor fast decisions
A strong environment supplies continuous low-intensity pressure toward its own standard, so conformity to it costs the individual nothing. The shaping is constant and therefore cumulative, which is why it outperforms episodic correction.
