Premack Principle

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A high-frequency behavior can serve as the reinforcer for a low-frequency one, which is why the household version is called the grandmother rule: you may do what you want only after you have done what you would rather avoid. Structurally it builds the incentive into the sequence itself, turning a hated task into the toll paid on the way to a preferred activity rather than relying on willpower alone.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Bakes incentive into sequence: the reward already exists and is merely reordered - Cuts the willpower demand: structure carries the motivation instead of your raw resolve - Protects the reward: the enjoyed activity is genuinely earned and never quietly skipped
Anchor fast decisions
Motivation is not a fixed pool that can simply be willed upward; it attaches to behavior. Placing a preferred activity strictly after an avoided one makes the preferred activity a contingent consequence, so the dreaded task gets completed in order to reach the reward instead of being completed only when inspiration happens to arrive.
