Morning Pages

INTRODUCTION
English translation pending.
CORE DEFINITION
A tool introduced by Julia Cameron in The Artist's Way: on waking each morning, immediately handwrite three pages of stream of consciousness. Nobody else ever sees them, grammar does not matter, and the only task is to dump whatever clutter sits in the mind onto the page. The accumulated anxiety, trivia, and self-doubt move out of working memory, and once that space is genuinely clear, creativity can enter it.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Mental detox: persistent anxiety and self-doubt are moved out of working memory onto paper - Buys a clean slate: cleared mental space is what new ideas can actually enter - Lowers the bar: no editing and no audience remove the friction that blocks writing
Anchor fast decisions
Unresolved concerns occupy attention in the background, quietly consuming the capacity that creative work actually requires. Writing them out externalizes each loop and effectively closes the open tab, which frees the working memory that insight and sustained focus need in order to operate at all.
