INTRODUCTION

English translation pending.

CORE DEFINITION

The idea holds that explaining material to someone else exposes the gaps in one's own understanding, because the parts that were merely recognized must now be produced and connected. It is the classical ancestor of the Feynman technique and is supported by the generation effect, in which material produced by the learner is retained better than material read. The core claim is that output rather than input drives consolidation, so a rotation of internal teaching sessions is the cheapest available way to raise a team's capability. The qualification is that teaching without reflection produces performance rather than learning.

SCAFFOLDING EFFECT

psychology

Reduce cognitive load

- Teach to test: explain the topic to another person and note exactly where you stall. - Fix the stall: study the specific part where your explanation broke down. - Rotate the sessions: have team members teach in turn so everyone produces explanations.

anchor

Anchor fast decisions

Recognition is easier than production, so reading creates an impression of understanding that survives until the material must be generated. Explaining forces production, and the point where the explanation stalls is precisely where the understanding is missing, which turns a vague sense of knowing into a specific gap. Preparing to teach also requires organizing the material into a structure, which is the same operation that makes it retrievable later. Questions from the audience then supply corrections the teacher could not have generated alone.
