Community of Inquiry

CORE DEFINITION
The community of inquiry framework was developed by D. Randy Garrison, Terry Anderson, and Walter Archer for online and collaborative learning. It holds that a worthwhile educational experience requires three presences to intersect: cognitive presence, the individual's construction of meaning through reflection and discourse; social presence, the ability to project oneself as a real person and trust the group; and teaching presence, the design and facilitation that keeps inquiry on course. The core claim is that deep inquiry occurs only where all three are present. The qualification is interdependence: strong content with no social trust yields shallow exchange, and warmth with no facilitation yields conversation without inquiry.
SCAFFOLDING EFFECT
Reduce cognitive load
- Design the task: pose a question that creates genuine cognitive conflict. - Build social presence: establish enough trust and safety for members to state half-formed views. - Provide teaching presence: facilitate, question, and keep the inquiry aimed at a conclusion.
Anchor fast decisions
Knowledge is constructed when claims are articulated, challenged, and revised, which requires members to say things that may be wrong. That willingness depends on social presence, since exposing uncertain thinking is only tolerable where trust exists. Sustaining the exchange long enough to reach conclusions depends on teaching presence, which supplies the structure and the questions that move the group past agreement. Remove any one and the pattern changes: no cognitive presence yields chat, no social presence yields performance, and no teaching presence yields an exchange that never resolves.
